Case Study: Citrix & Advids - Restructuring Communication Video For Centralized Access Management Solutions

Restructuring communication video

Summary

This case study details how Advids partnered with Citrix to produce a strategic two-dimensional (2D) motion graphics video. The video's objective was to communicate a new, simplified secure access solution during a complex corporate restructuring. By leveraging The Advids Clarity & Engagement Framework, we translated the abstract and stressful topic of Information Technology (IT) access into a clear, engaging, and human-centric visual metaphor. The project's critical juncture was aligning a minimalist, line-art animation style with Citrix's strong corporate brand, a challenge that was overcome through a focus on strategic, metaphorical storytelling.

The Challenge

Corporate restructuring is a period of chaos. For Citrix, it meant communicating a new, streamlined system for data access to a confused audience of employees, new contractors, and partners. The core challenge was twofold:

  1. Conceptual: How do you explain an abstract (and often dry) concept like "secure private access" in a way that is instantly understood?
  2. Emotional: How do you do this for a stressed-out audience that is already overwhelmed by change, and position the new system as a relief, not another burden?

The client needed a communication tool that could cut through the noise, build confidence, and "make the line go away."

The Solution

Advids developed a 35-second 2D motion graphics explainer that used a simple, powerful metaphor. We visualized the problem not as data packets and servers, but as a relatable human experience: a long, frustrating line of people waiting for access, with a single, overwhelmed IT admin trapped inside a "padlock."

The solution, "Citrix Secure Private Access," was then visualized as a central, protective shield that services everyone instantly and securely. This script-to-visual strategy, executed with a clean, minimalist style, turned a complex IT policy into a simple, three-act story: Problem (The Line) -> Bottleneck (The Lock) -> Solution (The Shield).

Client Profile

Citrix is a global leader in digital workspace and application delivery solutions. Their technology provides secure, reliable access to the systems and information people need to get work done, no matter where they are.

Project Objective

To create a clear, concise, and engaging animated video to communicate the benefits of Citrix Secure Private Access to an internal and partner audience in the context of a corporate restructuring. The primary goal was to reduce confusion and build confidence in the new, simplified access protocol.

The Advids Clarity & Engagement Framework

For this project, Advids employed its specialized workflow for high-concept explainer videos. This framework prioritizes conceptual clarity and narrative flow. It involves a strategic process of scripting, visual metaphor development, storyboarding, and brand-aligned motion design to ensure the final product is not only visually appealing but, most importantly, easy to understand.

The Production Deep Dive: From Abstract Chaos to Animated Clarity

Phase 1: Visual Strategy: Finding the Core Metaphor for Restructuring

  • Goal: To translate the client's complex challenge ("communicating secure access during a restructure") into a single, understandable visual idea.
  • Process: The Advids creative team focused on the human experience of the problem. During a restructure, people's roles change, and they need new access. The most common pain point is waiting. This led to the central metaphor of "the line."
  • (IMG ASSET 1) (Timestamp: 3s)
  • Action: We proposed a narrative built entirely around this metaphor. It starts with a single need ("Customer data, plz") which then multiplies into a line of confused and waiting people. This immediately framed the problem in a way everyone could relate to.
  • (IMG ASSET 2) (Timestamp: 6s)

Phase 3: The Critical Juncture: Aligning a Minimalist Style with a Corporate Brand

  • Goal: To get client buy-in for a visual style that was minimalist and approachable, rather than a traditional, "corporate-blue" explainer.
  • Process: This was the project's Brand Alignment Challenge. The Advids team presented the Style_Frames_Minimalist_v4.png, which featured simple line art, a limited color palette, and significant negative space.
  • Action: We provided a strategic rationale. This "less is more" approach was a deliberate choice. It reflected the "simplicity" and "clarity" of the solution itself. By avoiding visual clutter, we forced the viewer's attention onto the story and the metaphor, making the message more memorable.

Feedback Loop: Committing to the Minimalist Metaphor

  • Client: "We've reviewed the Style_Frames_Minimalist_v4.png. We like that it's different, but is it too simple? We need to convey that this is a powerful, secure, enterprise-grade solution."
  • Advids: "That's a valid concern. We see this minimalist style as the best way to communicate clarity. A busy or technical-looking video would just add to the 'chaos' of the restructure. This style feels human and accessible. It shows you understand their frustration and are offering a simple, elegant solution, not another complex system."
  • Client: "That's a strong point. Let's proceed. We agree the focus should be on clarity."

Phase 4: Motion Design: Animating the Flow from Problem to Solution

  • Goal: To animate the approved assets with a flow that feels fluid, professional, and reinforces the narrative.
  • Process: Our motion designers used Keyframe Animation with careful Easing to bring the simple vector illustrations to life. The transitions were key. We used a "line-wipe" transition to reveal the IT admin trapped in the padlock, visually connecting the "line" of people to the "bottleneck."
  • (IMG ASSET 3) (Timestamp: 8s)
  • Action: The "solution" reveal (00:18) was animated to feel centralized and protective. Dashed lines connect the central "shield" to all the users, showing how the new system resolves the "line" and empowers everyone at once. This visual payoff provides the sense of relief the client wanted to communicate.
  • **** (Timestamp: 19s)

Feedback Loop: Pacing the 'Problem' for Maximum Impact

  • Client: "We reviewed the Animatic_v1_Pacing.mp4 on Vimeo Review. We like the flow, but the 'waiting line' scene at 6 seconds feels a bit rushed. We want the audience to really feel that frustration."
  • Advids: "Excellent feedback. We can easily extend that shot. We'll add 1.5 seconds, allowing the line to grow by one more person, and hold on the 'question mark' character for a beat. That should build the tension perfectly before the 'padlock' reveal."

Synergy Analysis: Technology vs. Human Expertise

This project was a prime example of how communication is a craft, not just a technical process.

  • Technology-Powered Contributions:
    • Vector Illustration: Provided clean, scalable assets that could be animated without loss of quality.
    • 2D Animation Suite: Allowed our animators to use complex keyframing and interpolation to create smooth, professional motion from simple drawings.
    • Vimeo Review: Facilitated precise, frame-specific feedback (like "add 1.5 seconds"), streamlining the revision process.

  • Advids’ Visualization Craft (Human Expertise):
    • Strategic Empathy: The ability to understand the emotional state of the audience (confused, stressed) and choose a tone (calm, clear) to match.
    • Conceptual Storytelling: The expertise to identify a core, universal metaphor (waiting in line) for a complex, abstract problem (data access).
    • Brand Navigation: The creative confidence to propose a non-traditional visual style and provide the strategic justification for why it was the right choice for the client's brand and objective.

Outcomes & Strategic Learnings

  • Outcome: The final video was a highly effective communication tool. It successfully reframed the new access system not as another IT hurdle, but as a solution to the chaos, significantly reducing confusion and support tickets during a critical transition period for Citrix.
  • Strategic Learning 1: Metaphor is King: For complex or "dry" topics, a single, powerful metaphor is more effective than any amount of feature-based explanation. The "line" and "lock" immediately communicated the problem.
  • Strategic Learning 2: Style Serves Strategy: The "Brand Alignment Challenge" was a valuable reminder that visual style is not just decoration. The minimalist choice was a strategic tool to enhance clarity and build trust. This successful "creative risk" strengthened the partnership between Advids and the client.
  • Asset Scalability: The clean, iconic assets created for this video (the shield, the line-art characters) are now part of a visual library that Advids can easily repurpose for Citrix for future communications, ensuring brand consistency.
