Case Study: Cubeware & Advids - Corporate Overview Animation Video For Driving Data-Driven Decisions

Corporate overview animation video

A case study on how Advids transformed Cubeware's static brand guidelines into a dynamic "motion language" to explain their complex software ecosystem.

Summary

This case study examines the production of a 2.5-minute corporate overview video for Cubeware, a leader in business intelligence and planning software. The challenge was to explain a complex, multi-faceted platform using a strict, minimalist brand identity. Advids implemented its Clarity & Engagement Framework to develop a unique "motion language" for the brand, turning the static "yellow line" logo element into a dynamic narrative guide. This approach successfully translated abstract software concepts into a clear, engaging, and visually cohesive 2D motion graphics animation.

The Challenge

Cubeware needed to explain its entire integrated software suite—from backend data "Cockpit" to "Management Dashboards," "Reporting & Analyse," and "Planning"—in a single short video. The primary hurdle was conceptual: how to visualize these abstract and interconnected processes clearly? This challenge was compounded by a strict brand guideline: a minimalist, two-color palette (a specific yellow and dark blue) and simple, icon-based visuals. The risk was producing a video that was either too simplistic to be informative or too monotonous to be engaging.

The Solution

Advids proposed a strategy that embraced the brand's minimalism and turned it into a strength. Instead of just presenting static information, we developed a cohesive visual narrative. Our 2D motion graphics team designed a custom "motion language" for the Cubeware brand. The brand's simple yellow line was transformed into the "Yellow Conduit," a primary narrative device that acts as a data path, a camera guide, and a transition element, seamlessly connecting every scene and product feature. This, combined with a custom library of vector-based isometric icons, allowed us to build a dynamic, interconnected "Cubeware world" from the ground up.

Client Profile

Cubeware is a software company specializing in Business Intelligence and Performance Management solutions. Their platform provides a central "cockpit" for clients to manage, analyze, and plan their business data, offering powerful reporting, dashboarding, and analytics tools.

Project Objective

To create a high-end corporate overview video that demystifies the Cubeware software ecosystem. The video needed to be visually engaging, strictly on-brand, and capable of clearly communicating the function and integration of its various platform components to a B2B audience.

The Advids Clarity & Engagement Framework

For this project, Advids utilized its specialized workflow for 2D motion graphics, which focuses on transforming complex ideas into clear and compelling visual stories.

  1. Visual Strategy: Defining the core visual metaphor (the "Yellow Conduit") and the isometric style.
  2. Vector Illustration: Creating a complete, custom library of icons and assets (buildings, devices, charts) that are uniquely "Cubeware."
  3. Storyboard & Animatics: Mapping out the entire visual narrative, scene by scene, and locking in the timing and flow.
  4. Keyframe Animation & Motion Design: Bringing the assets to life with precise, "engineered" motion that aligns with the brand's identity.
  5. Kinetic Typography: Integrating text elements seamlessly into the 2D environment to label and explain key concepts.

The Production Deep Dive: Engineering a Visual Language

Phase 1: Visual Strategy: The "Yellow Conduit"

Goal: To establish a visual metaphor that could unite all of Cubeware's disparate software features.

Process: The script moved from data sources to dashboards, to reporting, to planning. We needed a visual thread to connect them. The Advids creative team identified the yellow line from Cubeware's logo as the key. We proposed the "Yellow Conduit" concept: a flowing line of "data" that would guide the viewer's eye, construct the scenes, and physically link every product.

Action: The client loved this idea, as it elevated their simple brand element into the star of the show. This conduit became the foundation for all transitions, ensuring the video felt like a single, seamless journey.

(Timestamp: 36s) This shot shows the "Yellow Conduit" in action, connecting data cubes to a central laptop, perfectly visualizing the "Management Dashboard" concept.

Phase 3: The Critical Juncture: Defining a "Motion Language"

Goal: To overcome the "static" feel of the initial-brand-aligned concepts and create a dynamic, engaging video.

Process: The first set of style frames (Style_Frames_Isometric_Set_A_V1.png) was technically correct—it used the right colors and an isometric view. However, the client rightly pointed out that it felt flat.

Feedback Loop: From Static to Dynamic

  • Client: "We've reviewed the style frames. The illustrations are clean, but this just looks like a static infographic. How will this feel in motion? It seems boring."
  • Advids: "This is excellent feedback, and it's our top priority to solve. The problem isn't the illustration; it's the lack of a defined motion language. We need to define how the Cubeware brand moves. We propose developing 'engineered easing'—making icons 'construct' themselves with precision—and using the yellow line to drive the camera. Let us show you a quick motion test."

Action: This led to a breakthrough. The Advids animation team developed a set of motion principles. Buildings (00:01) wouldn't just "appear"—they would be "drawn" by the conduit. Data (00:10) wouldn't just "flow"—it would pulse with energy. This "motion language" was the solution that proved we could be 100% on-brand and visually dynamic.

Phase 4: Full Production: Building the Cubeware Ecosystem

Goal: To execute the full 2.5-minute animation, ensuring every scene was clear, engaging, and consistent.

Process: With the motion language approved, our team built out the full vector-based world. This involved creating dozens of custom icons for every concept, from servers and laptops to specific charts and user interface elements. The Advids team focused on fluid transitions, using the "Yellow Conduit" to pull the camera from one scene to the next, like moving from "Reporting & Analyse" (01:17) to "Planning" (01:54).

Feedback Loop: Adding Clarity to "Planning"

  • Client: "We're on the right track, but the 'Planning' section (01:54) is unclear. It just looks like laptops. How does this relate to planning?"

  • Advids: "That's a valid point. The concept is too abstract. We will add visual elements to make it explicit. We'll animate arrows (01:59-02:01) to represent 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' planning, and show how the data flows between the central and user laptops. This will visually explain the process."

(Timestamp: 1:59s) The addition of animated arrows clearly explained the "top-down/bottom-up" planning concept, addressing the client's feedback directly.

Technology Meets Visualization Craft

This project was a perfect example of how creative strategy and technical execution must work together.

  • Technology-Powered Contributions:
    • Vector Illustration: A high-end vector software suite allowed for the creation of a massive, scalable library of custom icons and assets that were sharp and optimized for animation.
    • 2D Animation Suite: Advanced motion design software was essential for the complex keyframe animation, path-based motion, and custom easing curves that defined the "motion language."

  • Advids’ Visualization Craft (Human Expertise):
    • Conceptual Storytelling: The ability to look at a complex software suite and a simple brand guide and invent the "Yellow Conduit" narrative. This is a creative, human-led solution.
    • Brand-First Motion Design: Our expertise wasn't just in "making it move," but in defining how it should move to reflect the client's brand identity—precise, technical, and modern.
    • Problem-Solving: When a scene like "Planning" was unclear, our team's experience in 2D animation allowed us to quickly pivot and devise a clear, elegant visual solution (the arrows).

Outcomes & Strategic Learnings

A Central Asset for a Complex Brand

The final video was a huge success. It provided Cubeware with a central, powerful asset that could explain their entire platform in under three minutes. It was used on their website, at trade shows, and in sales presentations.

Minimalism is a Strength, Not a Weakness

This project reinforced a key learning: brand constraints are an opportunity for creativity. By being forced to work within a two-color palette, our team focused on what really matters in an explainer video: narrative flow, clarity of concept, and fluid, high-quality motion.

A Motion Language is a Brand Asset

The "motion language" we developed for Cubeware became a valuable asset in itself. The way icons "construct" and data "flows" can now be replicated in future videos, creating a consistent, dynamic, and recognizable brand identity in motion. This is the core principle of The Advids Clarity & Engagement Framework: we don't just make a video; we build a communication tool.
