Executive Summary
In the competitive landscape of enterprise communications, hardware launches require more than just feature lists; they demand an experiential narrative. For the release of the UniFi Talk Generation 3 family of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phones, the client sought to visualize the seamless convergence of premium industrial design and powerful software integration. Advids leveraged its Precision Visualization Workflow to transform complex Computer-Aided Design data into a cinematic product tour, solving critical challenges in photorealistic material rendering and User Interface compositing to deliver a high-impact launch asset.
The Challenge: Elevating Enterprise Hardware
The client faced a dual challenge: visually distinguishing the new G3 hardware aesthetic—characterized by sleek lines and premium materials—while simultaneously explaining the abstract benefits of "Talk Relay," a cloud-based integration service. The production required a delicate balance: the hardware needed to look tangible and expensive, yet the on-screen software interface had to remain legible and dynamic. Standard product photography could not achieve the required depth of field control or the impossible camera moves needed to fly inside the ethernet ports and around the glowing LED indicators.
The Solution: Advids Precision Visualization
Advids responded with a full-scale 3D production pipeline. We utilized the client’s engineering data to create "Digital Twins" of the devices, allowing for infinite control over lighting and camera movement. By hybridizing these 3D assets with crisp, 2D motion graphics, we visualized the invisible data flows of the "Talk Relay" system. The result is a video that functions both as a lustrous product reveal and a technical educational tool.

Production Deep Dive
Phase 1: Sculpting the Digital Twin (Data Ingestion)
Goal: To convert manufacturing-ready data into render-ready geometry.
Process: The client provided high-fidelity Computer-Aided Design files (Assembly_G3_Phone_Raw.step). These files are mathematically perfect but geometrically heavy. Advids engineers used retopology techniques to optimize the mesh density, ensuring the models were lightweight enough to animate but retained the perfect curvature of the physical device.
Action: We paid specific attention to the ethernet ports and mechanical buttons, ensuring the bevels caught the light realistically to emphasize build quality.
Visual Asset 1 (00:15): The camera glides over the rear ports of the device. This shot confirms the success of the tessellation process, showcasing the intricate details of the metal shielding and plastic molding without any geometric artifacts.
Phase 2: The Critical Juncture – The Reflection Paradox
Challenge: A significant visual hurdle emerged during the lighting phase. The G3 phones feature large, glossy touchscreens. In a realistic lighting environment, these screens would reflect the studio lights and environment, rendering the on-screen User Interface content unreadable.
Constraint: We could not simply make the glass "matte" as it would betray the premium industrial design of the product.
Advids Solution: We implemented a "Selective Ray Exclusion" technique in the compositing stage. We rendered the device body and the screen glass in separate passes.
- Pass A: The device body with full environmental reflections.
- Pass B: The User Interface graphics with a custom emission channel.
- Pass C: A reflection pass for the glass that was masked to be 30% subtler over the UI elements.
This allowed the screen to look like glossy glass at the edges, while the center remained perfectly legible for the software demonstration.
Visual Asset 2 (00:32): The "Talk Relay" dashboard is displayed on the device. Notice how the screen retains a premium sheen on the bezels, but the data charts are crisp and high-contrast, perfectly illustrating our solution to the Reflection Paradox.
Phase 3: Feedback Loop – Refining the Brand Glow
Context: The "UniFi Blue" LED ring is a signature brand element.
Feedback: During a review on Vimeo Review, the client noted: "The blue light on the central button feels too cool/teal. It needs to match the specific hex code of our actual hardware LEDs."
Advids Action: We adjusted the spectral emission settings in our Physically Based Rendering engine. Instead of a generic blue light source, we mapped the exact color temperature (Kelvin) and intensity of the actual hardware diode to the 3D model, ensuring brand consistency.
Phase 4: Visualizing the Invisible Ecosystem
Goal: To explain "Talk Relay," a feature that allows third-party Private Branch Exchange providers to connect to UniFi phones.
Process: Since this is a software feature, it has no physical form. Advids designed a motion graphics sequence involving a cloud icon and data streams connecting to the hardware.
Action: We synchronized the 2D data stream animation with the 3D camera move. As the camera pulls back from the phone, the data stream expands, visually suggesting connectivity that extends beyond the device itself.
Visual Asset 3 (00:48): The animation transitions to a global view with map markers. This effectively communicates the "Zero Touch Provisioning" capability, translating a technical feature into a visual story of global scale and ease of deployment.
Synergy Analysis: Technology vs. Human Expertise
- The Technology: High-end GPU rendering farms allowed us to calculate complex light paths through the glass and plastic materials, achieving photorealism that rivals physical photography.
- The Human Factor: While the software calculated the light, the placement of that light was a human artistic decision. Advids lighting artists hand-placed "rim lights" to accentuate the curves of the handset, a technique borrowed from automotive photography to evoke a sense of luxury and speed.
Outcomes & Strategic Learnings
The "UniFi Talk G3" launch video successfully established the new product line as a premium contender in the enterprise space.
- Metric of Success: The video was deployed across the client's global site manager and social channels, serving as the primary visual reference for the G3 series.
- Strategic Learning: This project reinforced the value of Hybrid Compositing. By decoupling the screen content from the physical device render, we maintained the flexibility to update the User Interface graphics late in the production pipeline without re-rendering the heavy 3D geometry—a workflow efficiency that saved approximately 120 render hours.
