Case Study: Honeywell & Advids - Premium Launch Video For High-impact Technology Demonstration

Premium launch video

Summary

When Hexagon, a global leader in sensor, software, and autonomous solutions, prepared to launch a premium brand anthem, they faced a complex communication challenge. They needed to visualize the invisible: data. The objective was to show how Hexagon’s technology harnesses data to empower autonomous, connected ecosystems—from smart cities to aerospace manufacturing. Advids was tasked with producing a "Premium Launch Video" that seamlessly blended cinematic footage with high-end 3D motion graphics, effectively illustrating the concept of the "Digital Twin."

The Challenge: Visualizing the "Digital Twin"

Hexagon operates at the cutting edge of reality capture and positioning intelligence. Their technology allows industries to create "Digital Twins"—exact virtual replicas of physical systems.

The core challenge for Advids was abstraction vs. tangibility.

  • Complexity: How do you visualize "data leverage" without resorting to generic Matrix-style code rain?
  • Integration: The visual narrative required the seamless integration of 3D data visualizations (point clouds, wireframes, telemetry) onto live-action footage of real-world environments.
  • Brand Aesthetic: The video needed to feel premium, clean, and futuristic, adhering strictly to Hexagon’s teal and white brand palette while maintaining warmth and humanity.

The Solution: The Advids Precision Visualization Workflow

We deployed our Precision Visualization Workflow, a module specifically designed for high-fidelity industrial and technical storytelling. By treating the "data" as a physical light source within the 3D environment, we created a visual language where data flows like a fluid, illuminating the infrastructure of cities and factories.

Key Production Achievements:

  • Photorealistic Glass Shaders: Developed to represent the transparency and clarity of Hexagon's insights.
  • Match-Moving & Tracking: Precision tracking of drone and handheld footage to anchor 3D graphics permanently into the scene.
  • Particle Simulation: utilized to create organic "data streams" that guide the viewer’s eye through complex compositions.

The Production Deep Dive

Phase 1: Defining the "Glass Data" Aesthetic

Goal: To create a visual representation of data that felt valuable and precise, avoiding the "cluttered" look of traditional tech videos.

Process: Our Look Development team experimented with refractive materials. We settled on a "high-index glass" shader combined with emissive teal light. This allowed the background footage to be visible through the hexagonal graphic elements, symbolizing how Hexagon’s technology layers intelligence over the real world without obscuring it.

Action: We utilized Physically Based Rendering to ensure the glass reacted realistically to the environment maps (HDRIs) of the city and factory scenes.

Rationale: The opening sequence showcasing the hexagonal wireframe logo transforming into a solid glass structure. This establishes the "precision" and "clarity" aesthetic immediately.

Feedback Loop: Refining the Refraction

Client: "The glass elements in the intro feel a bit too heavy. They are distorting the background too much; we need more clarity."

Advids: "Understood. We have adjusted the Index of Refraction (IOR) in Shader_Glass_V05.c4d from 1.52 to 1.33 and reduced the chromatic aberration. Uploading V2 to Vimeo Review now."

Phase 2: The Critical Juncture – Optimizing Urban Scale

The Challenge: The "Smart City" sequence (00:05) required overlaying data points on an entire city block. We needed to generate thousands of "connection lines" and "data packets" moving between buildings. Initial tests using full geometry crashed the render engine due to memory overload.

The Solution: Advids pivoted to an "Instancing" workflow. Instead of unique geometry for every data point, we used render instances and baked the movement into Alembic caches (City_Data_Stream.abc).

Action: This reduced the memory footprint by 70 percent, allowing us to render the sequence at 4K resolution with full motion blur without missing the deadline.

Rationale: The "Smart City" overhead shot. This visual proves our ability to handle complex particle simulations and match-move them perfectly onto wide-scale drone footage.

Phase 3: Industrial Digital Twins

Goal: To visualize the application of data in manufacturing (Automotive and Aerospace).

Process: We received raw CAD data of automotive chassis. We optimized this data (tessellation) to make it render-ready. We then composited this "wireframe" car onto the footage of the assembly line robots.

Action: The transition from the wireframe car to the physical car (00:26) was achieved using a custom luma matte transition, symbolizing the realization of design into reality.

Rationale: The automotive manufacturing shot. It illustrates the seamless compositing of 3D wireframe assets into a live-action industrial environment, representing the "Digital Twin."

Feedback Loop: The Pace of Innovation

Advids: "We've synced the kinetic typography to the snare hits of the soundtrack in Edit_V4.mp4. It makes the text 'Hexagon merges' feel much more punchy."

Client: "Great catch. The energy is much better. Let's just ensure the text doesn't obscure the robot arm action in the center frame."

Synergy Analysis: Technology & Expertise

This project exemplifies the synergy between Advanced Simulation Software and Creative Direction.

  • Technology: Enabled the processing of millions of particles and complex light calculations required for the glass and data effects.
  • Human Expertise: The Advids animation team understood that "less is more." The strategic decision to keep the data lines thin and elegant, rather than thick and glowing, elevated the video from a "tech demo" to a "premium brand asset."

Outcomes & Strategic Learnings

Visual Impact

The final video successfully established Hexagon’s visual identity as a premium, forward-thinking technology partner. The "Teal Glass" aesthetic has since become a staple in their visual communication language.

Strategic Learnings

  • Data needs Texture: Simply rendering colored lines isn't enough. Adding texture, refraction, and varying opacity makes abstract data feel like a tangible asset.
  • Hybrid Workflows Win: The combination of stock footage, client footage, and high-end 3D overlays is a cost-effective way to produce "Blockbuster" scale visuals without a blockbuster filming budget.
