Case Study: IBM & Advids - 2D Corporate Communications Video For Digital Transformation Strategy

2D Corporate Communications Video

Executive Summary

In the competitive landscape of property management technology, explaining complex database relationships to new users is a significant hurdle. Guesty, a leading platform for short-term rental management, partnered with Advids to produce a Two-Dimensional Corporate Communications Video. The objective was to demystify the concept of "Multi-Unit Listings"—a powerful but intricate feature. By deploying The Advids Clarity & Engagement Framework, we transformed abstract software logic into a relatable, character-led narrative, resulting in a training asset that is both educational and visually cohesive with the Guesty brand.

The Communication Challenge

The core challenge lay in the abstract nature of the subject matter. Users often struggle to understand the hierarchical relationship between a "Multi-Unit" (the parent inventory, such as a block of identical apartments) and "Sub-Units" (the individual rooms). A standard screen-recording tutorial risked being dry and visually cluttered, potentially confusing users with too much data density. The client required a solution that could visualize this "Parent-Child" database structure intuitively without overwhelming the viewer with technical jargon.

The Advids Solution

Advids proposed a stylized Motion Graphics approach that prioritized visual metaphors over literal software screenshots. We developed a custom character, "Gabby," to act as the viewer's guide, bridging the gap between the physical world (the property) and the digital world (the dashboard). By recreating the software interface as simplified vector art, we directed the viewer's attention strictly to the relevant functions, stripping away visual noise and ensuring the "Multi-Unit" concept was immediately grasped.

Client Profile

  • Client: Guesty
  • Industry: Property Management Software
  • Headquarters: Los Angeles, California / Tel Aviv, Israel

Primary Objective

To reduce customer support tickets related to listing setup by providing a clear, visual explanation of the Multi-Unit feature, thereby increasing feature adoption and user confidence.

The Advids Clarity & Engagement Framework

Our production strategy utilized a specialized workflow designed for high-fidelity Two-Dimensional explainer videos.

Key Workflow Stages:

  1. Strategic Scripting & Conceptualization: Defining the narrative arc.
  2. Visual Strategy & Look Development: Character design and style frames.
  3. Vector Illustration: Creation of scalable assets.
  4. Storyboarding & Animatics: Pacing and transition planning.
  5. Motion Design & Animation: Character rigging and kinetic typography.
  6. Interface Simulation: Stylized recreation of the software platform.
  7. Sound Design & Mastering: Voiceover synchronization and audio mixing.

Production Deep Dive: Orchestrating the Visual Narrative

Phase 1: Defining the Vector Aesthetic

Goal: To create a visual language that felt professional yet approachable, consistent with Guesty's brand identity.

The Process: Advids began by designing the protagonist, "Gabby." We avoided hyper-realistic proportions, opting instead for a clean, geometric style that animates smoothly. The color palette was strictly restricted to Guesty's corporate blues, with accent colors used only to highlight interactive elements within the software.

Action: We utilized Adobe Illustrator to create a modular character rig (Character_Gabby_Rig_V2.ai), separating head, torso, and limbs to allow for fluid "Puppet Pin" animation in later stages.

Figure 1: Gabby introduces the concept, establishing a friendly and knowledgeable tone immediately (00:01).

Phase 2: The Critical Juncture – Visualizing the "Invisible" Logic

The Challenge: The script called for an explanation of how multiple identical rooms constitute a single "Multi-Unit." Early tests using standard flowcharts felt disconnected from the user's reality.

The Constraint: We could not film real properties due to privacy concerns and logistical costs.

The Advids Solution: We implemented a "Visual Metaphor" strategy. We illustrated a cross-section of an apartment block containing six identical rooms. We then utilized a morphing transition where this architectural illustration seamlessly transformed into the digital list view on the dashboard. This visual trick instantly communicated that the "List" is a direct representation of the "Block."

Artifacts: Apartment_Block_Vector_V4.eps, Morph_Transition_Test_03.mp4.

Figure 2: The architectural metaphor visualizes the "Multi-Unit" as a physical block of identical rooms (00:18).

Phase 3: Feedback Loop: Refining the User Interface Simulation

Feedback: During the review of Animatic_Guesty_Draft_02.mp4 on Vimeo Review, the Client noted that the text on the software dashboard was difficult to read on smaller screens.

The Pivot: Advids decided against using direct screen captures. Instead, we rebuilt the User Interface entirely as vector graphics (UI_Dashboard_Cleaned_V4.eps). This allowed us to remove non-essential columns, increase the font size of key data fields, and highlight the "Grouped" functionality without pixelation.

Outcome: A pristine, uncluttered representation of the software that focused the viewer's eye exactly where we wanted it.

Figure 3: The stylized User Interface allows for clear focus on the specific grouping functionality without visual clutter (00:29).

Phase 4: Ecosystem Integration

Goal: To visually demonstrate that these listings push data to external platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com.

The Process: We created a sequence where the central Guesty dashboard emits signals to external channels. We ensured strict adherence to the brand guidelines of the third-party platforms.

Action: Using dynamic line animations, we connected the central listing to the external logos, reinforcing the "One Source of Truth" value proposition.

Synergy Analysis: Technology Meets Design Expertise

This project exemplified the synergy between advanced vector design and strategic communication. While software like Adobe After Effects provided the technical means to animate, the success of the video relied on the human expertise of the Advids creative team to translate complex database logic into simple, digestible visual metaphors. The decision to simulate the User Interface rather than record it was a strategic choice that significantly enhanced the educational value of the content.

Outcomes & Strategic Learnings

The final video serves as a cornerstone of Guesty's help center. By simplifying the "Multi-Unit" concept, the video empowers users to set up their inventory correctly from day one.

Strategic Takeaways:

  • Abstraction is Clarity: When explaining complex software, removing irrelevant details (abstraction) often provides more clarity than a literal representation.
  • Character Anchors: A recurring character provides a human anchor in technical content, making the information feel less intimidated.
  • Vector Scalability: Building assets in vector format allows for infinite scalability, ensuring the video remains crisp on any device, from mobile phones to large presentation screens.

Next Step for You: Would you like to discuss how we can apply this "Visual Metaphor" approach to simplify your own complex software features or internal processes?
