The Dark Mode Aesthetic Swipe File: 219 High-Ticket Tech Videos Audited for Color Psychology

Published 14 September 2026 · 22 min read

ADVIDS Research

Dark mode here means frames that run dark, a mean luminance under 90 on a 0-to-255 scale across nine sampled frames, not a product's theme setting. High-ticket is the reader's test, because the files hold no prices; 35 of the 219 name an enterprise buyer. Color psychology means the palette choices the set makes, since nothing here measures what a colour makes anyone feel. Across 219 dark tech product videos from 194 companies, uploaded 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026, 186 sit on a near-black ground, 148 carry no light palette tone, blue leads 115, 166 carry one colour or none, and 82 of the 101 accents are vivid. Stills from Cadence, Pinecone, Arm, Celigo, etc. illustrate the eight patterns.

944 tech product videos with computed frame values were screened against a rule written before the frame fields were read; 668 qualified, and the 219 whose frames run dark make up this swipe file, from 194 companies. Every one is a product, launch, demo or explainer video for technology sold to organisations, runs 0:20 to 4:00, and was uploaded to YouTube between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026, 145 of them in 2026. The 244 light and 205 mixed videos are counted beside every pattern as contrast. In this report a video is one tech product video, a company is the one selling the product, and a pattern is a palette choice counted across the dark set; no period is compared with another.

Questions this report answers

Do B2B tech product videos use dark mode?

Of the 668 tech product videos that qualified, uploaded 2022 to 2026, 219 run dark frames, 244 light and 205 mixed. Dark means mean luminance under 90 across nine sampled frames, not the product's theme setting.

What colours do dark tech videos use?

Pure black, #000000, is the ground of 146 of 219 dark tech product videos, and blue leads the palette in 115, ahead of teal-cyan in 27 and red in 24. Arm and Board lead with blue on navy grounds.

How many colours does a dark mode product video use?

The set gives counts, not a rule: 166 of 219 dark palettes hold at most one colour entry beyond greys, blacks and one-step tints, against 144 of 244 light palettes.

What accent colours do dark tech videos use?

Of the 101 dark videos with an accent colour, 55 use blue and 82 a vivid one; the commonest single value is #002040, a deep navy. Arkose Labs uses a vivid red in the dark band.

Do enterprise tech videos use dark mode more often?

Not by a margin this set can call: 35 of 219 dark videos carry a stated enterprise signal, against 20 of 244 light videos, under the 10-point floor. Price is not in the files, so high-ticket stays the reader's test.

How was this swipe file built?

ADVIDS Research screened 944 library videos against a rule written before screening; 668 qualified and 219 run dark. Each five-colour palette was decoded into ground, hue, colour count and accent by fixed rules, and the dataset ships with the report.

How to read this report

The set is the 219 qualifying tech product videos whose frames run dark, from 194 companies; the 244 light and 205 mixed videos are contrast only. N of M counts videos: M is the 219 dark videos unless the sentence names a smaller base, such as the 101 with an accent colour, the 35 with an enterprise signal or the 43 with full visual coding. A pattern gets a chapter when at least half its base carries it; a gap against light or mixed videos counts at 10 points and 8 videos, and bases under 20 are written as counts.

Pattern 01 · Ground · 219 dark tech product videos, 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026

1. 186 of 219 dark tech videos sit on a near-black ground

186 of 219 dark tech product videos uploaded between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026 sit on a near-black ground, the palette colour covering the most frame area, and 146 of them sit on pure black, #000000. 63 carry a tint or a colour in the ground, 44 of them blue, and the commonest tinted ground is #000020, one grid step off black towards blue, in 22. For contrast, none of the 244 light videos and 74 of the 205 mixed videos sit on a near-black ground, while 220 of the light videos sit on #E0E0E0. The ground is black before it is anything else.

Companies with a tinted or coloured ground include Intel, 1Password, Adverity, AHEAD, etc. In the still, Cadence renders the copper vias of an Allegro X board on pure black.

Kantar goes the other way. Its April 2026 BrandDigital video runs 1:29 on a violet ground, #6000A0, at a mean brightness of 68, with 4 colour entries among its five palette colours. The ground is a colour field, not a black.

Dark in this set means black, not charcoal or navy; where there is a tint, it sits in the other four palette colours.

Pattern 02 · Light tones · 219 dark tech product videos, 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026

2. 148 of 219 dark tech videos carry no light palette tone

148 of 219 dark tech product videos uploaded between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026 carry no light tone, a value whose brightest channel reaches C0, among their five palette colours, and 115 carry three or more near-black colours. In 102, every one of the five sits in the near-black or dark band; 45 carry exactly one light tone. The median dark palette holds 3 near-black colours against 0 in the light set. None of the 244 light videos lacks a light tone, and 26 of the 205 mixed videos do. The dark set layers blacks and charcoals rather than setting large areas of white against black.

Companies with exactly one light tone include AFL, Akeneo, AMD, Amplitude, etc. In the still, Pinecone draws its vector-database architecture in dim grey labels and magenta outlines on a near-black grid.

Orange Business goes the other way. Its May 2026 contact-centre video runs 2:40 on a black ground but carries 2 light tones, white and a pale grey, from illustrated agents, message icons and white type.

Pattern 03 · Lead hue · 219 dark tech product videos, 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026

3. Blue leads the palette in 115 of 219 dark tech videos

Blue leads the palette in 115 of 219 dark tech product videos uploaded between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026, against 90 of 244 light videos and 82 of 205 mixed videos, 15.6 points above the light set. Teal-cyan leads 27, red 24, violet-magenta 13, orange-yellow 13 and green 9; 18 carry no hue at all. Blue appears somewhere in 139 dark palettes, and 106 carry a near-black colour tinted blue, against 19 of the light set. In 52 of the 115 blue-led palettes the blue lives only in tinted blacks and greys; the other 63 carry a blue colour entry. The blue sits in the blacks as well as in the colours.

Companies whose palette green leads include Anthropic, Deliverect, Greenly, Hesai, etc. In the still, Arm draws a video-processing pipeline in blue outline icons on a navy gradient.

Deliverect goes the other way. Its April 2026 Deliverect AI video runs 0:52 with green leading the palette: two dark green values and a teal (#000000, #002020, #002000, #004020, #E0E0E0) sit under white type and a light menu panel.

Pattern 04 · How many colours · 219 dark tech product videos, 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026

4. 166 of 219 dark tech videos carry one colour or none

166 of 219 dark tech product videos uploaded between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026 carry one colour entry or none among their five palette colours, and 117 carry none: every value is grey, black or a one-step tint. 49 carry one, 15 two and 38 three or more. The light set carries more: one colour or none in 144 of 244 light videos and none in 91, 16.8 and 16.1 points below the dark set. 121 dark palettes carry two or more tinted greys or blacks, and 205 stay within two hue families. Where a dark tech video has colour, it has one.

Companies with three or more colour entries include Altera, Alteryx, Appian, Arm, etc. In the still, Celigo outlines three app cards in teal, magenta and white on black; the lines are too thin to reach the five palette colours, which hold only blacks, greys and two faint tints.

Make goes the other way. Its February 2026 AI Agents launch video runs 1:00 with 3 colour entries, every one violet, on a black ground (#000000, #200040, #000020, #200060, #400080).

Pattern 05 · Accent · the 101 dark tech product videos with an accent colour

5. 82 of 101 accents are vivid, 66 in the dark value band

101 of 219 dark tech product videos uploaded between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026 carry an accent colour among the four palette values after the ground; 118 carry none. Of those 101, the accent is vivid in 82 and sits in the dark value band, its brightest channel at 40 or 60, in 66; 58 are both, and 12 are light. In the light set the accent is vivid in 68 of 153 and in the dark band in 20, with 110 light. Blue is the accent in 55 of the 101, violet-magenta in 17, orange-yellow in 10, teal-cyan in 8, red in 6 and green in 5; the commonest single accent value is #002040, a deep navy, in 13. Among colours large enough to register, the accent is saturated and deep.

Companies with a light accent include Alloy, AppOmni, Arbe, Conga, etc. In the still, Arkose Labs lights a black grid corridor with red strands, its accent a vivid red in the dark band.

Alloy goes the other way. Its February 2026 AI Assistant video runs 1:30 on a black ground with a muted pink accent in the light band, #E080A0, drawn as pink circles beside white diagonal stripes.

Pattern 06 · Product category · the 136 dark tech product videos with a recorded product category

6. Blue leads in all three categories with 20 dark videos or more

Blue leads the palette in 42 of 80 dark AI and agent videos, 23 of 38 data, cloud and infrastructure videos and 14 of 24 hardware, chip and automation videos, the three categories holding 20 dark videos or more among those uploaded 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026. The smaller groups are counts, not shares: blue leads 8 of 17 security videos, 6 of 17 customer, sales and marketing videos, 5 of 12 finance videos, 5 of 8 work and HR videos and 4 of 7 developer-tool videos. 83 dark videos carry no recorded category, and blue leads 42 of them. Against the light set, blue leads 33 of 96 light AI videos, 18.1 points under the dark AI videos, but 21 of 34 light data and cloud videos, level with the dark ones. In AI the blue comes with the dark frame; in data and cloud it comes with the category.

Companies with blue-led dark AI videos include Kentik, Amazon Web Services, Ataccama, Backbase, etc.; blue-led hardware videos include Celigo, Cepton, Dematic, Epicor, etc. In the still, Intel renders the layers of its PowerVia chip technology on deep blue.

HubSpot goes the other way. Its June 2026 video on one platform for AI assistants runs 0:30 with red leading the palette: a maroon ground, #200000, under a peach-to-pink gradient arch and lines of kinetic type.

Pattern 07 · Enterprise signal · the 35 dark tech product videos that name an enterprise buyer

7. 24 of 35 enterprise-signal dark videos lead with blue

35 of 219 dark tech product videos uploaded between 3 May 2022 and 3 August 2026 carry a stated enterprise signal: the word enterprise, or a named enterprise buyer such as a CIO, a CISO or IT teams, in the title, tags or transcript. High-ticket is the reader's test; this signal is the proxy the files allow. Blue leads 24 of those 35 palettes, against 91 of the 184 without the signal, 19.1 points apart; 27 carry one colour or none and 20 sit on pure black. The signal is not a dark trait in itself: 20 of 244 light videos and 28 of 205 mixed videos carry it, 7.8 and 2.3 points from the dark share, under the 10-point floor. 20 of the 35 carry the signal only in the transcript, and the 78 dark videos with no transcript could carry it only in a title or tag. Where a dark video names the enterprise buyer, the palette narrows to black and blue.

Companies with the enterprise signal include SailPoint, Atlassian, Aviso, Board, etc. In the still, Board sets its forecasting dashboard cards on a navy ground.

Atlassian goes the other way. Its May 2026 Rovo video names the enterprise in its title and runs 0:58 with no hue at all: white type on black, every one of its five palette colours grey, black or white.

8. Kinetic type is in 24 of 43 coded dark builds

Among the 43 dark tech product videos with full visual coding, uploaded 3 May 2022 to 3 August 2026, kinetic typography is in the build of 24, against 10 of 55 light videos and 12 of 39 mixed ones. 3D is in 14 dark builds against 3 light and 12 mixed, and a product shot appears in 14. A title card appears in 33 and an interface motif in 31, but the interface is a segment more than the format: screencast is listed for 15 of the 43 dark videos against 34 of the 55 light ones, and screen capture sits in 11 dark builds. Build codes are medium confidence for 7 of the 43, including 3 of the 24 kinetic-type codes and 4 of the 14 3D codes. Dark frames travel with type and rendered objects; light frames travel with the captured screen.

Companies with kinetic type in a dark build include Arkose Labs, Blink, Bloomfire, Board, etc.; 3D builds include Cadence, Crestron, HPE, Infobip, etc. In the still, Lyzr sets the LyzrGPT name as kinetic type on black.

What to do with this

  1. Pattern 01 If 146 of 219 dark tech videos sit on pure black, decide in the creative brief whether yours does too, or whether a brand-tinted dark ground is the deliberate difference.
  2. Pattern 02 If 148 of 219 keep every palette colour out of the light band, decide how much of your frame is white type or light panels before style frames are drawn.
  3. Pattern 03 If blue leads 115 of 219 dark palettes, check whether your blue is a brand colour or a default before the grade is approved.
  4. Pattern 04 If 166 of 219 carry one colour entry or none, name that one colour in the brief and treat any second colour as a choice to defend.
  5. Pattern 05 If 66 of the 101 accents sit in the dark value band, put a deep saturated accent and a bright one side by side on your own frames before choosing.
  6. Pattern 06 If blue leads 42 of 80 dark AI videos, decide whether your lead hue is meant to match the category or depart from it.
  7. Pattern 07 If 24 of 35 enterprise-signal dark videos lead with blue, decide whether your palette follows that black and blue or carries your own hue.
  8. Pattern 08 If 24 of 43 coded dark videos build with kinetic type, budget the type animation as its own line rather than a finishing pass.

Coding schemeValuesDefinition
Frame themedark · light · mixedComputed, not coded: mean luminance across nine sampled frames; dark under 90, mixed 90 to 150, light 150 and over, on a 0-to-255 scale. It covers every frame, not the product interface alone.
Palettefive hex values on a 32-step gridComputed from the sampled frames. The first value tracks the video's brightness far more closely than the other four (a correlation of 0.85 against 0.44 to 0.51) and is read as the ground.
Entry classneutral · tint · colourChroma, the brightest channel minus the dimmest: 0 is neutral, one grid step (32) is a tint, two or more (64 and up) is a colour.
Hue familyred · orange-yellow · green · teal-cyan · blue · violet-magentaThe hue angle of a tint or colour: red 345 to 15 degrees, orange-yellow 15 to 75, green 75 to 165, teal-cyan 165 to 195, blue 195 to 255, violet-magenta 255 to 345.
Value bandnear-black · dark · mid · lightThe brightest channel: 20 or less is near-black, 40 to 60 dark, 80 to A0 mid, C0 or E0 light.
Lead huea hue family, or neutralThe family carried by the most tinted or coloured values; a tie goes to the family that appears first; neutral when all five values are grey or black.
Accenthue family · saturation band · value bandThe colour entry with the highest chroma among the four values after the ground. Saturation under 0.5 is muted, 0.5 to 0.8 mid, 0.8 or more vivid.
Product categorynine families, several per videoWhole-word matches in the vertical field (visually coded videos only), topic tags and title; a video matching none is counted as not recorded.
Enterprise signalyes · noThe title, a topic tag or the transcript names enterprise, Fortune 500, Global 2000, large organisations, CIO, CISO, IT leaders, IT teams or security teams. It stands in for high-ticket and is not a price.
Build and motifskinetic_type · 2d_animation · 3d_cgi · ui_mockup · screen_recording · live_action · stockCoded from frames for the visually coded videos only, with a confidence of high or medium; motifs are coded per timed segment.
Not codedaltitude · castWhat each video argues and who appears. The library records neither, and this report does not code them.
